I woke up this morning hardly realising that its eid along with gandhijayanti. My roomie had left for eid ka namaj and my other roomie had left for his cricket match and I slept a little more when I remembered that there are no internal exam, no project briefing , even no jamming session planned, after a long time I actually had a day off. Saroj, my roomie returned disappointed that his match was canceled because of some function being held on the cricket ground for gandhijayanti, which of course is a good thing, sure we should celebrate gandhijayanti. But why does it end there, why only one day to think about the mahatma, that too only to participate in a debate competition.
Why there are these days, birth days, don't you have a whole life time to cherish life then why wait for your birth day to do some good work, why wait for someone's birthday to give them a present. Fathers' day, mothers' day... why not start your day with their name, what's wrong with keeping their picture in your wallet along with your girlfriend's. Of course that doesn't mean that we shouldn't be celebrating these days but what about there significance, they are just reminders of their purpose to be cherished any day, everyday, instead they have become cliched traditions which are there, just for the heck of it...
On a lighter note, in the last one month I've been busy in so many stupid things that I've lost touch with some of my closest friends and this Dussera I'll try my best to normalize everything... so wishing you a very happy Dussera
I was one of the two the event organizers for debate that day on 27th, and while making it the biggest ever biz event yet in sankalp, I was more than just tired... I was completely sloshed. What kept me going was the thought of watching Euphoria perform live that evening, which was my favorite band. The day before, me and my band had given another stage performance on the huge stage of sankalp-08, with 2 songs from rock on, 1 from euphoria and 2 more songs... the show was reasonably good, only for the small technical problem with the sound system, that made us inaudible to the back rows. I was asked for autograph by some cute girls and even by some faculties from outside college, but none of it was of as much significance to me as to what followed that evening on 27th. I got a call from Pranab to run to the conference room , where Euphoria was expected to rest before their show begins and I obliged... It was 6pm and euphoria was scheduled to reach by 7pm, they were staying at Gopalpur, hotel Swosti, after their performance at Infosys, bbsr on 26th. So me, pranab, sumeet, lelin n jagannath along with puri (that's our band) waited for about an hour running around making the arrangements along with the hospitality department. The whole team of euphoria reached at 6.45 but without Palash, they went straight to the stage and did their sound testing for almost an hour and came to conference room where all of us were waiting. We spoke to them and they were really cool, they gave us as much autographs as we asked for. Banny(benjamin pinto, their keyboard player) was the koolest among them with his rock star hairdo and persona. Pranab got all of them to sign his guitar. Then right at 8pm Palash arrived with a new hairstyle, he was just so chilled out and pleasently surprised when all of us sang the alaap of their song Mantra, sumeet introduced him to all our band members and he again obliged us with his autographs and pics. Then they left for the stage and show began right at 8.45pm and it was the first rock show for most of our band members and needless to say we were mesmerized, hats off to Palash who sang continuously till 12.30am that night without a break and i dreamt of doing the same some day... the icing on the cake was when palash called the NIST band to the front row and asked us to sing Mantra with them... just one of the most thrilling moments of our lives. The two most memorable days of my life, 1st when I trekked past Sarpass in Himachal and 2nd, the day I was Euphorized... Hoping to reach the same level as Euphoria some day...
I woke up this morning and I was 64. I was in a huge house with all the luxuries I ever wanted; only I was alone. I tried to remember what has happened till date and I couldn't. The pictures on the walls told the story of a successful career with many achievements, but why there were no pictures of my happy self? Then I saw a locked shelf, looked like it was not opened in years. I opened it. The first thing I saw was the guitar strap I bought back in the final year of my engineering college, with PROMISE written on it. It was a promise I had made to myself that some day I'll buy my own guitar and perform with this strap on. I saw the last CDs of my 1st recording along with the guitar tabs and lyrics of the songs that we composed.
There were pictures of the self I was looking for; the happy one among the many pictures of my band. Then I saw her, that picture of her was my most prized possession. There she was with her gorgeous smile, glittering in red, the love of my life. Two drops rolled out of my eyes and I thought, God, What have I missed... Then I remembered the day, I had decided to let go of my dreams and make a great career. The day I myself rejected my love thinking it was only slowing me down and not letting me go away. What I thought was best for me, apparently killed me slowly every day for the last four decades...
I wished to go back and change it all, to go ahead with my dreams, to confess my love to her... but it was too late...
I woke up to the loud jamming noise in Pranab's room. It was 7am and I was again late for Software Engineering class. I had the list of Wipro projects in my hand. I got up and got ready for the class again prepared to enter late into the classroom. As I was walking towards college with the project list in my hand, I was happy, who gets a second chance in life... I did. In my back pack a black strap was hanging with it saying in bold, PROMISE...
Now we haven’t ever broken the law, always celebrated the Independence Day, cheered for India, then how are we not worthy citizens? The other day I saw a guy giving a great speech of patriotism on the birth day of the Mahatma, after the thunderous applause from the crowd he went backstage put his paan in his mouth and started spitting those red fluids all over the place. Of course it was a public place, and he is the public, so that gives him the right to spoil the place. Now let’s talk about us, a friend of mine who always considered himself a good citizen was waiting outside a govt. office that provided driving license. He had to attend a party and was in a hurry so instead of waiting for his turn he went up to the chaprashi and handed him a 10rs note and got in time for the party. As I asked him about it he said, the system is already flawed. I didn’t start anything new. Agreed, the system is flawed, what exactly does that mean. System; it’s made up off people, the public and the public comprises of me, you, basically us. So that means we are flawed. Each time we break the rule or encourage someone to break it we are enhancing the flaw in the so called system. Keeping mum about such acts is an equal crime, a crime to the country. The thing that disappoints me the most is when the youth, today’s India also joins the trend of blaming others. It’s high time now to stop blaming and try to find a solution together. Change in a society starts with change in one individual, change in yourself, myself, basically the self. The power of one is always underrated; power of one is the power to do something, anything. The Mahatma once said, come to think of a solution I always stop at points where I think it might not work with others, then I stop thinking about others and apply the solution to myself and gradually every one else follow. So why don’t you stop loitering the highway, patch up the hole on the road. Why not plant a tree or make sure to vote. You have the power to change yourself, your country, our country.
The clock showed 9 o’clock when I realized that I had been sleeping for 11 hours straight. I was late for my summer training class on the JAVA programming language for the third time in the last four days, that’s just a nicer way of saying that I haven’t shown up in the training institute after the introduction class. That’s me. I was having my breakfast when I happened to see some rather disturbing stuff on the 10 o’clock news. Every other state was having some sorts of riot and communal tensions, somewhere it’s because of some religious symbol and somewhere because of the quota system. Then I suddenly realized that India though being the biggest democracy in the world had more number of disputes internally then any other country. Not just the people but all the political parties were encouraging these disputes by taking sides. Then how can we call ourselves a peace loving country. India has seen more communal riots than any other country in the last ten years. We aren’t yet mature as a nation even after 50 years of independence, though leaping from an underdeveloped to developing country to a soon to be economic super power.
Once my uncle had told me about the three Cs of India; Cricket, Cinema and Corruption. He said these three things are holding back the country’s progress. Though I don’t agree on the first two, I believe corruption has a big role here. From grass root level to the highest administrative level, corruption has made its way to dictate the whole system. And what we don’t realize while commenting on the high level of corruption in the system is that corruption is now a part and parcel of our lifestyle, of us. From waking up to office to shopping, we are the people encouraging corruption; the system is corrupt because we are corrupt. Each and every citizen including the person writing this article should go over their life till date in fast forward and will soon realize that in one way or the other they haven’t been a good or responsible citizen. We have betrayed this country, by not being a worthy Indian.
